The Challenge
To create a proposal from which you will develop a personal theme. This theme will be used to develop the subject matter of the five works of Art that I will create this semester. This process will take place largely in your sketchbook as you add information to it over the semester.
Ideas and Concepts
- Using natural objects to create an image, like making a face out of flower petals. I came up with this idea after finding an image of a bird made entirely out of petals.
- I thought about using melted crayons as well, but I would like to use it to create an animal for person rather than just a melted design. Most of the time we see melted design such as the image on the left but, I would like to take something like the image on the right and create it using melted crayon.
- I have been looking into maybe doing a theme based on nature, I love sea shells and I thought making one of my works with them would be of interest to me. I'm not sure what I would create just as yet with it but I know that I may use sand as well in the work of Art.
- Image illusions also fascinate me, I love that you do not only look at the image as one thing but it can also be seen as another. I think if I used this concept it would make a good addition to one of my five works.
- Nature is what most of my works will be based around but I came up with the concept of using tissue paper to create an image or still life.
Media, Skills and Techniques
- Flower Petals
- Sand

Artists
Wanderer Above The Sea Fog
Artist: Caspar David Friedrich
Location: Kunsthalle, Hamburg (Germany)
Dimensions: 95cm x 75cm
Created: 1818
Media: Oil Paint
Period/Era: Romanticism
Caspar David Friedrich is one of my favorite artists, mainly due to this painting. I love this landscape having the mountains with a thick fog gleaming over them. There is so much that can be interpreted in this painting because of the "Wanderer". He could have just climbed to this high peak or he may be preparing to explore the horizon in front of him. I looked at this painting because as I have mentioned, I may want my theme to be based upon nature and this piece of work displays a unique climate that I may play around with in one of my works. I've also looked at another of Friedrich's works called The Abbey In The Oak wood, which inspired my idea to perhaps use tree branches as an element in my works because they can be manipulated in different ways and the can give a dark or eerie look to an image. The image can be found below.

"The Small Morning"
Artist: Phillip Otto Runge
Dimension: 106 x 81 cm
Location: Kunsthalle, Hamburg (Germany)
Media: Oil Painting
Created: 1808
Genre: Romanticism/Gothic
Philipp Otto Runge’s (1777-1810) Small Morning is part of an incomplete four-part cycle called the Times of Day. It is perhaps the oddest and, at the same time, the most representative image of early Romanticism and Gothic art. This piece has been considered a mixture of the Gothic and Romanticism genres because of the depiction of Christian-like angels and figures. Many early-nineteenth-century painters and writers had an intense interest in idealist and transcendental theories with this painting. This painting inspired my theme because of the natural look that is given to it. The flowers and landscape gives a sense of nature but at the same time a sense of religion and the concept of angels. At the top of the image it seems to represent the sun and going down we see the moon, this could symbolize the time of day and night. For my theme, this painting has shown me a very colorful work that displays nature and time in a unique way.

Chor Boogie is an American spray paint artist in California, his real name is Jason Lamar Hailey. Chor Boogie specializes in spray paints and pop culture. I find his work very interesting especially this one, its called "Romanticism" but its actually considered modern art. I love the colors and how vibrant it is. This work gave me the idea to use pop culture references but I decided that I wanted to use environmentalists instead of regular celebrities.

"One Hundred Poems"
Artist: Katsushika Hokusai
Created: 1820
Genre: Asian Artwork/Landscape work
This landscape piece is very inspiring due to the color scheme and the detail put into it. I looked at this piece to understand natural landscapes, I thought about using pen and ink because of this work; the lines are sharp and it defines the image in a unique way. However, I like the branches and how brittle they seem and I would like to do a piece based on branches and twigs.

"The Meeting" (Bonjour Monsieur Courbet)
Artist: Gustav Courbet
Location: Musee Fabre
Created: 1854
Medium: Oil on canvas
Dimensions: 129 cm x 149 cm
Genre/Era: Realism Art
"The Meeting" by Gustav Courbet is a very "normal looking" piece, meaning it looks like a regular/natural scene. This gave me the idea to add a sense of realism to my theme, I want my work to reflect nature but with a touch of realism and that can be interpreted by using certain objects to create my images. I found this piece very interesting because it is so detailed, every aspect of the painting even the grass has sharp detail and the toning aspect of the painting makes the people and the shadows of the image stand out and seem life-like.

"Sonata Of The Sea"
Artist: Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis
Created: 1908
Genre: Symbolism Art
Medium: Oil on Canvas
This painting was very intriguing when I first saw it, I loved the way the boats are situated at the bottom of the wave. This is an interesting image and I would like to make one of my works similar to this, where nature is conquering humans because people think that we can conquer nature but in fact it can conquer us.

"19 Spooky Animals"
Artist: Ellen Jewett
Location: Markham, Ontario
Genre: (considered a form of Steampunk)
Created: 2008
Ellen Jewett's 19 spooky animals are very cool, I love her work and this one in particular caught my eye. Jewett experiments with animals and their environments in order to create her work, she currently has 19 different sculptures with the same Steam punk touch to them. This fox has partially the same colors as a normal fox but pieces of its habitat are placed around its body and face. I would really like to try something like this because I find Steam Punk very interesting and Jewett's work has given me an idea that I would like to use real branches and twigs in my work like i'm sure she did in this one.
